Mob Attacks Meghalaya CM office in Tura: 5 Security Personnel Injured

A mob attacked the office of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in Tura on Monday evening. CM Sangma is safe, but five of his security personnel are injured. Night curfew has been imposed in Tura city.

Sangma was talking to representatives of the Achik Conscious Holistically Integrated Crime (ACHIK) and the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) when the attack took place. These organizations are on hunger strike for the last 14 days to demand that Tura be made the winter capital. The CM had called their representatives for talks on Monday.

The conversation was almost over when suddenly a crowd came and started pelting stones. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. The mob also tried to break the gate of the CM office.

CM Sangma has inquired about the condition of the security personnel injured in the violence. The picture of Sangma talking to the injured security personnel has appeared in the media. In the photo, injured security personnel are seen lying on the floor. The Chief Minister has announced assistance of Rs 50,000 for the injured personnel and medical expenses.

Uproar over 50 years old demand
Civil society groups say that Meghalaya got statehood for the first time in 1972. Tura was then promised to be made the capital. The agitators have also agreed to have a mini secretariat here.

He says that building a winter capital is the only way to develop and solve the problems of all the communities living in Garo Hills.
