What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer begins when abnormal cells develop and form a small lump (or tumor) in the breast. In about 90% of cases, the tumor forms in the milk ducts (ductal carcinoma) or in the mammary gland (lobular carcinoma). When cancer cells remain on the duct wall without infiltrating it, it is called ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS. It is very rare for a tumor to develop in the connective tissue or fat that makes up the rest of the breast.

Pomegranate juice

Drinking more than a small glass of soda or fruit juice per day could increase the  cancer, according to a study published in The British Medical Journal (BMJ). Consumption of sugary drinks, which has only increased in recent years, is already associated with an increased risk of obesity, itself recognized as an important risk factor for cancer. So, if we take juice in excessive quantity, then it would be harmful. So, only one small glass juice daily is applicable here.

Women who consume high amounts of apples, bananas, and green vegetables in their teens have a significantly lower risk of breast cancer when they become adults. Thus, consuming  green leafy vegetables will keep your health intact and avoid diseases. For instance, eat  greens, spinach, fenugreek, cabbage and soy regularly. Including these in the diet can prevent the risk of serious disease like cancer.

Diet containing carotenoids

Consuming plenty of carotenoids in helps reduce the risk of breast cancer. Carrots, cheese, bananas, tomatoes, apricots and sweet potatoes are beneficial in protecting against cancer cells.

Mushrooms

According to a study published in Nutrition and Cancer in 2010, high consumption of mushrooms is associated with a lower risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The cremini, oyster and shiitake mushrooms contain antioxidants such as L-ergothionein which protects against cancer.

Broccoli sprouts

According to scientists at the University of Michigan , these shoots are rich in sulforaphane, an antioxidant that can target and destroy the cells that make tumors grow.

Preliminary research suggests that snacking on two ounces (60 g) of nuts a day could slow the development of breast cancer tumors. Researchers at the Marshall University School of Medicine in West Virgine speculate that the antioxidants, omega-3s, and phytosterols in nuts can help slow the growth of cancer cells.

Blueberries

Research suggests that pterostilbene, a phytonutrient in blueberries , can stop the growth of cancerous tumors by causing them to self-destruct . This process is also called apoptosis. Frozen wild blueberries are just as antioxidant and packed with nutrients.

Spinach

Women premenopausal who consume high amounts of folate (spinach are good sources) were 40% less likely to have breast cancer , according to a study published in the ‘ American Journal of Epidemiology in 2011. The Vitamin B is necessary for proper cell division and obstructs DNA changes that can lead to breast cancer.

Eggs

Choline, an essential nutrient found in eggs, reduces the risk of breast cancer by 24%, according to an American study of more than 3,000 women. This essential nutrient found in the yolk of the egg is necessary for proper cellular functioning. The US Institute of Medicine says women should consume 425 milligrams a day; a large egg contains 126 milligrams. Other sources of choline are fish, poultry, pork, beef, broccoli and wheat germ.

Salmon

Salmon is one of the few foods contain vitamin D in large quantities. Researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto have found that an increased intake of the sun vitamin reduces the risk of developing breast cancer by 24% . Vitamin D can prevent cells from becoming cancerous. Also, eating fresh or canned salmon provides docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a powerful omega-3 fatty acid that can kill breast cancer cells and help stop the spread of the disease to other parts of the body.
